Powell is one of the least rented cities we serve, with about 11% of homes renter-occupied, and the median home went up around 2001 (ACS 2019-23). These are larger owner-occupied houses on landscaped lots near the Olentangy River. Shared-wall roach and bed bug calls follow rental housing, so they matter less here. Ants, wasps and mice are what usually bring people to the phone.

Why larger Powell lots mean more ants and wasps

A house built around 2001 on a landscaped lot has a lot of edge. Planting beds hug the foundation, irrigation runs through the turf, and there are porches, pergolas and tall gables to nest under. Ants follow the water to the slab. Wasps take the high, dry corners.

Tall two-story elevations matter. A nest up under a gable peak is a different job than one under a porch rail, and it calls for the right ladder and protective gear. Stay back from any nest you can see.

A nest in the gable or ants at the slab?

Give us the Powell address and tell us how high the nest sits or where the trail starts. We will plan the 16 mile run and say what the visit covers.

Olentangy River and Delaware County: shade, damp and ticks

Powell sits close to the Olentangy River, and yards near greenways and tree lines stay shaded and damp. That favors mosquitoes in standing water, and ticks in tall grass where a yard meets woods.

Cutting grass short, clearing leaf piles and emptying standing water cuts the numbers more than most people expect. Our guide to mosquito season in central Ohio explains the timing.

Four Corners, Golf Village and Village Green Park: how Powell is laid out

Powell sits in Delaware County about 14 miles north of Columbus, between the Scioto and Olentangy Rivers. First settlers arrived in 1801, the town was renamed Powell in 1857, it became a village in 1947 and a city in 2000 (Wikipedia). The center is the Four Corners, where State Route 750 meets County Road 9, called Liberty Street inside the city.

A 2002 annexation of about 1,000 acres along the Sawmill Parkway extension added the Golf Village community, which fits the median build year of 2001 on this page. The city has nine public parks, including Village Green Park, home of the annual Powell Festival. Older buildings near the Four Corners and newer lots farther out need different checks: eaves and wood trim near the center, mulch beds and irrigation on the newer streets.

Getting to Powell and what a visit covers

Powell is up near the edge of our range, so each trip gets planned. Tell us the address and what you are seeing, and we will give you the first window the route can offer. Arriving the same day depends on whether the schedule has room.

Before any treatment we ask about allergies, pets and kids. After that we work from the roofline down: gables and eaves, planting beds, foundation, garage, kitchen. Inside we use crack and crevice treatment and outside a perimeter treatment, both per the label, and the label's re-entry time gets passed along to you.

The Delaware County side: Powell, Shawnee Hills and Dublin on one run

Boydes has been owner-run since 1990, and Powell is the north end of a run that also reaches Dublin, Shawnee Hills and Worthington. Larger owner-occupied lots near the Olentangy River mean bigger yards, more outbuildings and more eaves per house, so a first visit takes a little longer than at a compact lot. We ask about allergies at each visit and provide documentation after an inspection, which helps when you keep records for a house you own.

Pest control in Powell: common questions

How soon can Boydes get to Powell from northeast Columbus?

Powell is about 25 minutes and 16 miles from Dunning Rd, on the far north end of our run into Delaware County, so we build it into a route. Coming the same day takes an open gap in the schedule. Phone early with the address and symptoms, and we will say whether today is possible or the next opening is the answer.

Why do ants and wasps show up around newer Powell homes?

Newer houses on large landscaped lots offer water, shelter and plenty of edges. Ants come with irrigation and mulch at the slab, and wasps start nests in gables, pergolas and porch ceilings in spring. Treating the perimeter and removing the nest, then trimming plants back from the house, handles both better than spraying one spot.

Do you treat for mosquitoes and ticks in Powell yards?

Yes. We treat the shaded edges, ground cover and standing-water areas where they gather, per label directions, and we ask about pets and kids first. Treatment lowers numbers but does not end them. Draining water, cutting grass short and clearing leaves do real work, so we go through those steps with you.

Do you offer one-time service in Powell, or only contracts?

Either works. A single nest or ant trail suits a one-time visit with no contract attached. With only 11% of Powell homes rented, many owners go with recurring visits, monthly, bimonthly or as needed, because the same pests return each season. The price depends on the pest and its spread, and you hear it first.

Will a high wasp nest on my Powell house cost more to remove?

It can, since reaching a nest at a high gable takes more time and the right ladder. We cannot quote a price without hearing the height and location, and we explain the price before any work starts. Send us a description or photo of the nest, and stay well back from it in the meantime.
