The median New California house was built in 2008, and rentals make up only about 6% of homes (ACS 2019-23). Pest problems here are rarely about age or shared walls. US 42, Industrial Parkway and a township that keeps growing

New California is a census-designated place in central Jerome Township, at the crossing of US 42 and Industrial Parkway, just south of where US 42 meets US 33. It was platted in 1853 (Wikipedia). The township counted 3,462 people in 1990 and 9,504 in 2020.

Most of that growth is new housing, which fits a median build year of 2008. Big Darby Creek forms part of the township's western border, and Sugar Run drains through it. Lots near either waterway stay damp longer after rain, and that matters for mosquitoes and for ants at the foundation.

Ants and wasps: the spring and summer calls on newer lots

Ants arrive first. Fresh mulch, sprinklers and new sod keep the ground moist next to the slab, and trails move inside through the same small cracks plumbing uses. Wasps follow, building under deck rails, soffits and the peaks of covered porches.
