Licking County is three different housing markets in one. The west edge is changing around Intel's Ohio site in Jersey Township, Buckeye Lake sits along the south side with its cottages, and the middle holds older cities and farms. The median home was built in 1978 and about 26% are rented (ACS 2019-23), which makes ants, mice and stinging insects the usual calls.
Buckeye Lake cottages and the damp-wood pests that follow
Lakeside houses and cottages sit close to water, trees and boat docks, and many of them are closed up for part of the year. Carpenter ants favor damp or rotting wood near a lake, and spiders and wasps settle into boat houses, porch ceilings and dock hardware. A cottage that has been shut for weeks is also a quiet place for a mouse to nest.
If you open a lake house in spring, check window sills and the underside of the porch roof before you start cleaning. Our page on carpenter ant control explains how to tell them from the ants that only visit your kitchen.

Around Intel's Jersey Township site: new builds and turned soil
Construction on a large site turns over a lot of soil, and ants and mice that lived in those fields look for the next shelter. New houses and apartments on the western side of the county are tight and well sealed, but gaps around garage doors, plumbing penetrations and vents still show up in the first year.
The homes near the site are what matter for pests. New construction beside open ground tends to see ant trails in the first summer and mice in the first fall.

The Licking River, Dawes Arboretum and the Earthworks: old trees and old water
Licking County was organized in 1808 and takes its name from the Licking River. Newark is the county seat, and the Newark Earthworks, part of the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks, became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023. Dawes Arboretum, founded in 1929, covers about 1,910 acres in Newark, with nearly 16,000 trees, shrubs and other plants, a bald-cypress swamp and the 70-acre Dutch Fork Wetlands.
Old trees, wetland and mown grass mean dead wood, damp ground and open sun, which carpenter ants, wasps and mosquitoes all use. Buckeye Lake began as the Licking Summit Reservoir, built from 1826 to 1830, and its water covers about 3,173 acres. A house near any of these gets a look at its eaves, wood trim and standing water, not just the kitchen.

Pest control in Licking County: common questions
Do you go all the way to Buckeye Lake and Hebron?
Yes, Buckeye Lake and Hebron are on our map, along with Newark, Heath, Granville, Johnstown and Pataskala. The drive from Dunning Rd runs about 40 minutes to the county, so give us your address and the pest when you call. A same-day stop is a maybe, and it depends on the schedule.
Will mice come into a closed-up lake cottage?
They can. A cottage that sits empty for weeks gives mice quiet space, and the gaps around plumbing and sill plates are easy to use. Seal openings of about half an inch, store food in hard containers, and call if you find droppings. We inspect and treat after we find the entry points.
What pests should owners of 1970s Licking County homes watch for?
Mice and ants top the list. The median home here dates to 1978, so foundations and utility lines have had decades to open small gaps. Wasp nests under eaves are common in summer, and cluster flies and stink bugs come indoors in fall. We ask about allergies before any treatment.
