These fall invaders do not bite, breed indoors or harm the house. They are a nuisance that arrives in crowds. This page belongs to our insect control in Columbus work and covers how to deal with them before and after they move in.

Why do stink bugs swarm my siding every fall?

They are looking for a place to wait out the winter. As days shorten in September and October, adult bugs leave fields, trees and gardens and fly to the warmest, sunniest surface they can find. A south or west wall with light-colored siding is exactly that. The bugs sit there all afternoon, then crawl into any crack that leads somewhere sheltered.

The pile-up on the wall is the visible part. Behind it, the bugs work their way into soffits, behind trim, around window frames and into attic vents. Once inside, they go dormant between the studs. Then a warm day in January or March wakes them, and they wander out of the walls and into the living room.

How do I keep overwintering bugs out of the attic?

Exclusion is the real answer, and the work is dull but effective. Exclusion means blocking the openings that insects use. The common ones on Columbus homes are gaps around window and door frames, loose or missing screens, soffit and ridge vents without fine mesh, utility penetrations and worn door sweeps.

Seal the small gaps with a good exterior-grade caulk, repair screens, and add mesh behind vents where air needs to pass. Do this in late summer. Caulking in November traps bugs that are already inside the wall. Virginia Tech research found stink bugs pass through gaps of about 3 to 7 millimeters.

Fine mesh behind a vent lets air through and keeps insects out.

A treatment on the outside works alongside exclusion, and it should not stand in for it. The treatment reduces the number of bugs on the wall during the weeks they are looking for entry, and sealing keeps the rest out.

What does stink bug and boxelder bug treatment involve?

We treat the outside of the home. That means a perimeter treatment, which is a band of labeled product applied to the foundation and the lower wall, plus a targeted pass over the sunny walls, eaves, window frames and soffits where bugs line up. Application follows the label directions, and the label gives you the re-entry time.

Timing matters more than anything else. A treatment applied after the bugs have gone into the walls does not reach them. We recommend booking in late summer or early fall, and we can talk through a second pass if the first wave arrives early or the weather stays warm.

Boxelder bugs have a second wrinkle. They develop on seed-bearing boxelder, maple and ash trees, so a female boxelder tree close to the house keeps feeding the problem. Removing the tree is often not practical, which is why exclusion carries so much weight on those properties.

What does a fall invader visit look like, step by step?

  1. You tell us what you are seeingWhich wall, which insect and how many. A photo of one bug is plenty for us to confirm the species.
  2. We ask about the householdPets, kids, allergies and fish tanks all shape the plan. We check again whenever we come back.
  3. We inspect the exteriorWe walk the sunny sides first, then check frames, soffits, vents and screens for the gaps that let bugs through.
  4. We treat the walls and perimeterTreatment focuses on the areas where the bugs gather and enter. We tell you what we applied and give you the re-entry time from the label.
  5. We give you a short sealing listYou get a practical list of gaps to close and screens to fix, in order of how much they matter.

Should I vacuum or crush stink bugs, and what about the dead ones?

Vacuum them. Crushed stink bugs give off their odor, and boxelder bugs can stain curtains and walls. A vacuum with a hose attachment picks them up cleanly. Empty the bag or canister outside afterward, since the smell lingers in a full vacuum.

Dead bugs in a wall void are the other half of the story. They do not cause structural harm, but carpet beetle larvae feed on dead insects, and a large die-off in the wall can feed them in spring. That is one more reason to keep the numbers down before they get inside.

What does stink bug control cost in Columbus?

Price depends on the size of the home, how many walls the bugs favor and how heavy last year's invasion was. We explain the price before work starts, and reviewers mention fair pricing with no surprise charges.

A single-story ranch and a three-story home with tall eaves are different jobs. Ask whether a second visit is included in the quote, since a late-season pass is sometimes part of the plan.

Columbus Health Code §221.03 and stink bugs: why the half-inch rule is not enough

Columbus Health Code §221.03 requires dwellings to be kept free of rodents and insects, and it calls for sealing openings of half an inch or more within 48 inches of ground level (Columbus Public Health). That rule is written for rodents. Virginia Tech research found stink bugs squeeze through gaps of about 3 to 7 millimeters, far smaller than half an inch. A home can meet the code and still have a wall full of fall invaders.

If a company treats your exterior for hire, Ohio requires an ODA Pesticide Business License, and the ODA public business search lets you check. The label then governs the job. Ask which product goes on which wall and when you can reopen windows, and get the answers in writing.

Why Boydes Exterminating for this work

Timing built into the plan

We work from the bug's calendar. Exterior treatment goes on while the bugs are still outside, because afterward it is too late.

Exclusion advice that costs little

Half the fix is caulk, screens and door sweeps. We tell you which gaps to close first, even when you do the work yourself.

Owner-run, since 1990

Robert J. Boyde Jr. runs the company that Mr. Robert Boyde established, and he answers for the work.

Follow-up as needed

Visits can be biweekly, monthly, bimonthly or as needed, so a late wave of bugs does not leave you waiting for next season.

Stink Bug & Boxelder Bug Control: common questions

Why do stink bugs swarm my siding every fall?

Adult stink bugs head for warm, sunny surfaces in September and October while they search for a place to spend the winter. Light siding on a south or west wall holds heat all afternoon, so they collect there. From the wall they crawl into cracks around frames, soffits and vents, and then settle into the structure.

How do I keep overwintering bugs out of the attic?

Close the openings before they arrive. Repair screens, add fine mesh behind attic and soffit vents, caulk gaps around frames and replace worn door sweeps. Do it in late summer. An exterior treatment on the sunny walls adds another layer, but sealing is what keeps bugs from reaching the attic in the first place.

Should I vacuum or crush stink bugs?

Vacuum. Crushing releases the odor, and boxelder bugs can leave stains on fabric and paint. Use a hose attachment, then empty the canister outdoors because a full vacuum can smell for days. If you want to avoid the odor completely, drop them into a bucket of soapy water instead.

Do stink bugs bite or damage my house?

No. Stink bugs and boxelder bugs do not bite people or pets, do not breed indoors and do not chew wood or wiring. They are a nuisance because of their numbers and, for stink bugs, the smell. Asian lady beetles can give a small pinch and stain surfaces with a yellow fluid when disturbed.

Why do bugs come out of the walls in winter?

A warm spell in January or March wakes them. They sit dormant in wall voids and attics, and a sunny day or a heating system that warms the wall tricks them into moving. They head toward the light, which is why they show up at windows. They cannot reproduce indoors, and most die before spring.

When is the best time to treat for fall invaders?

Late summer and early fall, before the bugs begin to gather. A treatment applied once they are already in the walls cannot reach them. If the weather stays warm, a second pass a few weeks later can help. We will suggest timing for your property when you call.
