Cockroach Prevention Checklist: Sanitation That Works
A cockroach prevention checklist comes down to three things roaches need and you can take away: water, food and hiding places. Cut those off and a few stray roaches have nothing to stay for, and any treatment you book works better.

Use the list below as a weekly routine, then keep the second list handy for the day a pest company comes to the door. Sanitation will not remove an established colony by itself, but nothing else works well without it.
Why does sanitation matter for cockroach control?
Roaches live where three things overlap, and the overlap is smaller than most people think. A crack behind the dishwasher, a sliver of grease and a damp trap under the sink are enough. Remove one corner of that triangle and the place stops working for them.
Water is the corner with the most leverage. A roach can survive weeks without a meal but only days without water, so a dry kitchen at night does more than a spotless counter that still drips. Cardboard comes second, since it is warm, dry and full of hiding places.
Sanitation also helps bait work. Gel bait is a slow food source that roaches have to choose to eat. If crumbs and grease are lying around, they will eat those first and ignore the bait.

Kitchen clean but roaches still around?
Describe what you see and where. We will tell you whether this is a prevention problem or a treatment one.

What is on the weekly cockroach prevention checklist?
Print it, stick it inside a cabinet door and work down the list once a week. None of it takes more than a few minutes.
- Wipe the sink dry before bed and fix any drip, however small.
- Run the trash out nightly, and keep the can lidded.
- Store dry food, pet food and cereal in lidded containers.
- Rinse recyclables, especially soda cans and juice bottles, before they go in the bin.
- Clean the stovetop, the backsplash and the grease behind the burners.
- Pull out the toaster and microwave and wipe where crumbs gather.
- Break down cardboard boxes the day they arrive and carry them out.
- Empty the pet bowl at night and wipe the floor around it.
- Check under the sink and behind the toilet for damp spots.
- Vacuum along baseboards and under the refrigerator toe plate.

Which entry points and hiding spots should you close up?
Once the kitchen is clean, shrink the number of places a roach can disappear. A caulk gun costs very little and does a lot of the work.
- Seal gaps around pipes under sinks and behind toilets.
- Caulk the seam where a countertop meets the backsplash.
- Replace worn door sweeps and weatherstripping on exterior doors.
- Screen vents and the dryer exhaust, and repair torn window screens.
- Fix loose tile and cracked baseboards that make tiny shelters.
- Inspect grocery bags, used appliances and boxes before they enter the kitchen.
Columbus Public Health says openings of half an inch or more within 48 inches of ground level should be sealed under Columbus Health Code §221.03. That rule is aimed at rodents, but roaches use the same gaps, so it is a good yardstick for any house.

What should you do before a roach treatment?
Prep decides how much of the treatment reaches the roaches. We ask for these steps before the visit, and we explain anything unclear when we book.
- Clear the work zonesEmpty the cabinets and drawers under the sink, around the stove and along the walls in the kitchen and bathroom.
- Move food and dishesSeal dry food and pet food in containers, and move dishes out of the work area or into bins.
- Pull furniture a few inches from the wallThat gives access to baseboards, outlets and the gap behind appliances.
- Skip the store-bought spraysRepellents push roaches into new rooms and can cause them to avoid the bait we place. Tell us what you used.
- Tell us about your householdWe ask about pets, children, allergies and fish tanks, and we plan around them.
You get the re-entry time from the product label, plus a short list of what to wipe and what to leave. For rental units, our page on apartment cockroach treatment adds notes on coordinating with neighbors.
How do you know the checklist is working?
Prevention only counts if you can measure it. Sticky traps do that cheaply. Penn State Extension calls them the main survey tool for German roaches, with traps set against walls, in corners, under equipment and in drawers, left for one week.
- Place a flat sticky trap under the sink, beside the stove, behind the refrigerator and at the bathroom vanity.
- Add traps along walls where cabinets meet, in a pantry corner and by the dishwasher.
- Label each trap with the spot and the date, and leave them in place for seven days.
- Count the roaches at each location and note whether they are large adults or tiny nymphs.
- Repeat the count a month later, after you have dried the sink, sealed food and moved the cardboard.
- Keep the cards. A drop in numbers means the changes are working, and a rise means call.
Penn State's survey guidance calls for ten or more trap sites. In a small kitchen, use as many as fit along the walls and under the appliances. Many tiny nymphs on one card point to an egg capsule that hatched nearby, which narrows where to look. Pay attention to the trap by the shared wall in an apartment, since that card often catches roaches arriving from next door.
How much should you clean at night?
The same Penn State guidance lists a short list of habits: clear spills, do not leave dishes out overnight, seal food and empty the garbage every night. Combined with caulk around the pipes, that is the core of home prevention. The rest of the checklist supports those four.
Is a clean home enough to keep roaches out?
Not always, and people deserve to hear that without a lecture. German roaches arrive in bags, boxes and used appliances, and in apartments they come through the walls. A tidy kitchen does not stop that.
The checklist above shrinks the odds and sharpens any treatment. If you are already seeing roaches in daylight or around cabinet hinges, it has moved past prevention. Our guide to how German roaches spread in an apartment shows where the rest of them come from.
Why do you see roaches in daylight?
Penn State Extension lists daytime sightings as a sign of a heavy population, or of roaches stressed by a lack of food and water or by a recent pesticide application. A roach crossing the counter at noon usually means the hiding places at night are full. Treat a daytime sighting as a reason to move from prevention to a plan.

What we tell customers about prevention
Most of our roach calls are not from dirty homes. They are from homes with one dripping trap, a stack of cardboard and a neighbor with the same problem. Cleanliness matters, but it is rarely the whole story.
We tell people to do the two things that cost nothing first: dry the sink at night and move the boxes out. Then we look at the building, because water and cardboard are easy to fix and the structure is not.
Prevention has a ceiling. If roaches arrive from a neighbor's unit through the walls, no amount of scrubbing will keep your kitchen free, and the useful step is to tell the landlord in writing. If you have seen one roach and your traps stay empty for two weeks, a call is probably not worth it. Dry the sink, move the boxes and keep checking. Call when the cards fill or when you see roaches by day.
Follow-up visits can run biweekly, monthly, bimonthly or as needed, depending on the property. A restaurant or a rental building usually needs a regular rhythm, while a single kitchen may need a visit and a check. We explain the schedule and the price before work starts.
Related questions
How do I keep roaches away for good?
Remove their water, food and shelter, and block the gaps they use to travel. That means a dry sink at night, sealed food, no cardboard stacks and caulked pipe openings. No habit is permanent protection, so recheck monthly and act early when you see the first roach.
Do roaches go away if I keep my house clean?
Sometimes, if only a few came in. An established group usually stays as long as it has water and hiding places, even in a clean home. Cleaning helps because it takes away competing food, which makes bait work better, but it rarely clears a colony alone.
What attracts cockroaches in the first place?
Moisture draws them first, then food residue, grease and cardboard. Warm appliances such as refrigerator motors and dishwashers give them places to live. In multi-unit buildings, roaches from a neighboring unit can also follow pipes and wall gaps into a clean kitchen.
How should I prepare for a roach treatment visit?
Empty the cabinets and drawers where we will work, seal food, pull furniture slightly from the walls and take out the trash. Skip store sprays before the visit. Tell us about pets, children and allergies so we can plan around them and give you the label's re-entry time.
How often should I check roach traps?
Leave each sticky trap down for a week, then count and replace it. Repeat monthly while you work through the checklist. Penn State Extension treats sticky traps as the main survey tool. If a Columbus kitchen keeps catching roaches at the same cabinet or shared wall, that spot is where treatment should start.
A routine takes the pressure off, but it does not replace a plan once roaches are established. Read our cockroach control overview, see how we treat German roaches, or call (209) 563-1650 to talk through your kitchen. We serve homes and businesses across Columbus.
